With the rapid growth of the world population and increasing demand for high quality protein, aquatic animals are promising weapons needed to attack protein deficiencies in areas where cereals (Carbohydrates) food has dominated especially in this country.
Fish as a food constitute a reasonable percentage of about 70% protein, which are good for the requirement of human being. The percentage of edible lean tissue in fish is appreciably greater that that of other animal such as beef, pork or poultry, therefore, it supplies a large amount of protein necessary for growth repair and replenishing of warn out tissue.
Consequently, the Nigerian consumers have been importing fish and fisheries products which amounted to about 444,000 tones valued at about N 265 million as at 1980, according to FISON Report (1985). The aim of man is to get fish near to him especially for the purpose of food cannot be over emphasized. Man can grow fish to earn income and derive the much needed fish protein. It is recorded in Nigeria that fishery practice was introduced to Nigeria in the year 1944 which served as a means of increasing the level of protein to rural farmers and which serves as a means of food substitute compare to the cost of meat. It was also stated that parts of fish contains no cholesterols which are readily present in animal meat of which has an adverse effect to human health.
Since fish is the cheapest means of protein that man can easily afford and in order to meet the demand of the increasing population, the need for fish and fisheries practice, as a form of large-scale business venture is desirable. Therefore, Duro Fisheries was established in the year 2002 at No. 12/14 Basiyi Street, Off Ayetoro Street, Aguda, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria to meet such desire. This fish farm operates a flow-through system with 17 big outdoor concrete tanks which are stocked with Claries species of different sizes, ranging from fingerlings to table size fishes. These tanks were being shaded with banana trees, which prevent direct sunlight. Also cages are being erected on each tank, which contain Poultry Layers of which their remnants serve as food to the fishes.
Hatchery: Duro Fisheries have its own Hatchery where young offspring are produced and raised from fry to fingerling before they are being transferred to outdoors tank. In this Hatchery, 40,000 – 50,000 fingerlings are being produced monthly which are sold to other farmers at cheap rate.
